Physical Education at Heston Primary School

National Curriculum

The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

Physical Education Vision

At Heston Primary School we aim to provide students with the skills, knowledge and experiences that will enable them to thrive in their lives beyond school. Part of our responsibility, is to ensure that students learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices that will positively contribute to their overall health and well-being. Our PE teaching and provision aims to inspire children to feel confident trying new sporting activities; discovering their passions and personal interests. Heston Primary School students demonstrate fairness, teamwork, respect and resilience in order to enjoy and participate in sports and other physically challenging activities.

Our Physical Education Curriculum

Being physically active should be enjoyable, and as such, PE at Heston Primary School provides learners with fun and inspiring access to a range of sports. We ulitise our on-site school field, ball-games pitch, playground and sports hall to provide a rich and diverse Physical Education curriculum, underpinned by the National Curriculum. In addition to this, we use and adapt the Get Set 4 PE scheme in order to provide a cohesive range of PE opportunities that develop sporting specific knowledge and skills. We work with outside agencies, (through utilisation of outside coaching personnel and resources) to supplement our offer. Children enjoy participating in Sports Day and intra/inter-school matches, where our local community is encouraged to be involved with our sporting events. Our PE curriculum is designed to ensure pupils have enjoyable PE experiences, where skills such as sensitivity, leadership, co-operation, competition and tolerance are nurtured.

We work closely with Sports Impact, and participate in various competitions arranged by them including local cluster fixtures. Along with the large variety of physical activities included within our Physical Education curriculum, we also offer a range of after school clubs such as: football, gymnastics and cheerleading. These extra-curricular clubs provide our children with the opportunity to further develop their interests, passion and skills in sporting activities.
