Reception
Young children learn best when they are playing. At Heston Primary, Reception students explore and learn through a range of fun, practical experiences that have been designed to enable development towards specific learning intentions. We provide a balance of child-initiated and adult-directed learning, with access to meaningful resources that students can utilise to further embed skills and understanding.
We aim to develop lively enquiring minds by encouraging children to ask questions and helping them find ways to answer. This is achieved through high quality provision and meaningful interactions with learners.
The Reception classrooms are language-rich and inviting. Learning is celebrated on display boards throughout the setting and areas are clearly defined. Our setting is open plan, providing lots of space for a wide range of equipment and activities. We also have a break-out room attached to our Reception classrooms, which is used for small group work. The outside area is split into separate areas for Reception and Nursery. This is because the resources, provision and labelling for Reception is different to that in Nursery. Our outside area has both open and covered areas to enable the children to be outside in all weathers, all year round.
We are very lucky to have a fully functional sensory room attached to our Reception setting. This is used by Reception and Nursery as one aspect of our provision for children with SEND needs.
Teaching and learning is planned around half-termly topics that have been selected by the Reception team. These topics provide a meaningful and exciting context for the knowledge and skills which are being taught.
